Dear subscribers to the archeoViz newsletter,
This is the 6rd archeoViz newsletter, about November 2023. Updates are presented by section below. This month, the news mostly regard the archeoViz portal!
Feel free to submit any suggestions you may have concerning the application and its interface, datasets to be integrated, or people likely to be interested (write to: archeoviz-maintainers@services.cnrs.fr).
All the best,
Sébastien, with Anaïs & Élisa

Publications and documentation
archeoViz and the archeoViz Portal were presented:
- at the Paléotime compagny, online, thanks to Cyril Viallet (06-11-2023)
- at Rennes University, France, at the “Séminaire archéologique de l’ouest”, thanks to Catherine Dupont (24-11-2023)
A short tutorial has been published on the blog.
Additions to the archeoViz Portal
No new dataset were added to the Portal in November, however several are in preparation.
Improvements of the archeoViz application
No significant change this month. Small fixes were published as version 1.3.3 on github.
The archeoViz Portal and indexation
Significant changes and improvements were made on the archeoViz portal:
- new variables are included in the metadata: the altitude of the site, 3 chronological periods (instead of 2), accuracy of the spatial location of the site (exact or fuzzy), the types of objects included in the dataset
- the interface of the portal has been reorganised with tabs
- the archeoViz instances can now be filtered by altitude (using a slider)
- in the table, the archeoViz instances regarding datasets available in open access are marked with an icon
- the “search” function of the table makes it possible to search:
- by chronological period, and
- by type of object (13 categories: lithic industry, animal bone, etc.)
Chronological periods are managed semantically: for example, a search made using the “Paleolithic” or “Palaeolithic” strings will retrieve not only the instances described as “Paleolithic”, but also those described as “Mousterian” (the “Mousterian” period being a sub-period of the “Paleolithic” period). A figure summarising the chronological concepts included and their relationships can be download from the archeoViz Portal homepage.
