Dear subscribers to the archeoViz newsletter,
This is the 2sd archeoViz newsletter, for June 2023. Updates are presented below by section.
More generally, feel free to submit any suggestions you may have concerning the application and its interface, data sets to be integrated, or people likely to be interested (write to: archeoviz-maintainers@services.cnrs.fr).
All the best,

Publications and documentation
A new paper was submitted and the slides of a presentation (in English) were published online.
- Plutniak, S. (submitted). “archeoViz: an R package for the Visualisation, Exploration, and Web Communication of Archaeological Spatial Data”, Journal of Open Source Software.
The talk “Fostering the Publication of Spatial Archaeological Data: a Decentralized Approach. The archeoViz Web Application and its Portal” was presented twice:
- at the Museum for Natural History, University of Florida (Gainesville, June, 29, 2023),
- at the School of Anthropology, University of Arizona, (Tucson, May, 19, 2023).
The slides are available at here.
Recent additions to the archeoViz portal
The datasets added to the portal in June include:
- La Tute du Pèlerin (655 objects)
- Madjedbebe (9136 objects)
- Kieler 1 (38,647 objects)
Improvements of the archeoViz application
- New features of the 1.2.1 version:
- Add linguistic support for German (thanks to Julian Laabs!)
- New features of the 1.2.0 version:
- URL parameters can now used to input data and set up the parameters of the application.
This allows, for example, to load a file stored somewhere in the web, e.g.
https://analytics.huma-num.fr/archeoviz/en/?objects.df=https://zenodo.org/record/8003880/files/bilzingsleben.csv
For more details, see the documentation. - The documentation and the “Guidelines” tab in the application have been significantly reorganised and improved.
- URL parameters can now used to input data and set up the parameters of the application.
Interoperability
Stenghtening the interoperability between archeoViz with 1) data repositories and 2) other archeological software are current major lines of development.
Data repositories
- Thanks to a research stay at the Center for Digital Antiquity (Arizona State University), where the tDAR repository is curated and maintained, allowed to developp a new feature to bind the objects in archeoViz (i.e. points) to their individual record in data repositories (through hyperlinks displayed in the table below the plots). So far, this has been implemented for three tDAR datasets:
Software
- From v1.8.0 the SEAHORS application allows to export data in the archeoViz format.
See the “Table” tab / “ArcheoViz Exports”, https://aurelienroyer.shinyapps.io/Seahors/
