Welcome to archeoViz!

archeoViz is an R Shiny application for the visualisation, interactive exploration, and web communication of archaeological spatial data. It generates interactive 3D plots, 2D cross sections and 2D maps of archaeological objects and their refitting relationships, computes basic spatial analysis methods, and displays excavation timelines. This application is designed as the building block of a decentralised web edition network for archaeological data:

  1. users can deploy archeoViz instances specific to their datasets on the server of their choice;
  2. the archeoViz portal, a companion online application, references and documents with metadata these archeoViz instances, increasing their discoverability and audience on the web, both for scientists and the general audience interested in archaeology.

It can also be used as an educational resource to introduce learners to spatial analysis, data formats, reproducible workflow, open science, and computational archaeology.

Principles

  • An incentive to publish: a workaround to archaeologists’ reluctance to publish data: archeoViz as a tool to promote data sets, emphasizing data reuse as an incentive to publish data.
  • A decentralized approach: archeoViz as the building block of a decentralized web edition network for archaeological data, made of as many archeoViz instances as there are datasets (instead of using a central repository).
  • A federative perspective: using the archeoViz portal to gather the multiple archeoViz static instances and describes them with metadata aligned on standards and authorities.

archeoViz receives an Open Science Free Software Award by the French Ministry of Research

On November, 26th, 2024, the French Committee for Open Science (Ministry of Research) awarded archeoViz with the Open Science Free Software Award (see the anouncement). This prize is intended to award not only a research software, but all its community, including users, developers, maintainers. This is a great achievement for the archeoViz community, and a significant support to our initiative in favor of fostering open science practices in archaeology.

archeoViz permet l’exploration visuelle et statistique de données archéologiques spatialisées, ainsi que la formation à l’analyse spatiale et à la science ouverte en archéologie. Il permet d’explorer interactivement un jeu de données issu de fouilles ou de prospections, ainsi que de l’éditorialiser facilement et rapidement sur le web. Des fonctionnalités favorisent en outre la reproductibilité et la communication des résultats des analyses. Quoique développée depuis 2022, 66 instances de l’application ont déjà été créées et cataloguées sur archeoViz Portal. Avec une interface traduite en 7 langues et des applications à des données produites dans le monde entier, l’écosystème archeoViz est d’ores et déjà employé bien au-delà de nos frontières.

      • your institution’s Shiny server,
      • your own Shiny server (on AWS, etc.);
    • or write to the maintainers to deploy it on the huma-num servers.

The tDAR repository

The tDAR repository is an online archive for archaeological and historic preservation information run by the Center for Digital Antiquity, Arizona State University (USA).

The Tute du Pèlerin Excavation Project

The Tute du Pèlerin is a Middle Palaeolithic site in the northern side of the Pyrenees Mountains (France). The excavation project is directed by Théo Minet (University of Toulouse, France).

The Papuan Past Project

The Papuan Past Project is a multidisciplinary research project encompascombining archaeology and bioanthropology to investigate the long-term history of human presence in New Guinea. archeoViz has been applied to the data from excavation at the Eripe 1 site.
